THE FACT

Michael donated an estimated $500 million to charitable causes over his lifetime — more than any other entertainer recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. He founded 39 separate charities, supported 39 different causes, and personally airlifted medical supplies to war zones on at least four occasions.

WHAT MOST DON'T KNOW

Heal the World Foundation was launched in 1992 with proceeds from the Dangerous tour. Its work included a $20 million airlift of medical supplies to Sarajevo during the Bosnian war, complete vaccination campaigns in seven African countries, and the construction of a children's hospital in Cape Town. He was the first artist to donate the entirety of two tour grosses (Bad and Dangerous) to charity, totalling roughly $80 million in 1980s-1990s dollars. He had no formal accountant tracking the giving until his estate took over after 2009; in fact, much of it was paid in cash from his personal accounts after being asked directly. Hospital staff in Bucharest, Cape Town, and Bogota have all reported receiving unannounced wire transfers in the early 90s. Quincy Jones once said: 'Mike's biggest problem his whole life was that he could not say no when a child or a hospital asked him for help. Not could not — would not.' The official Guinness record listing for 'Most charities donated to by a pop star' still belongs to him.
